About your itinerary

This week-long Malawi Challenge Expedition offers amateur athletes an unforgettable opportunity to combine endurance, adventure, cultural immersion and personal achievement in one of Africa’s most welcoming and scenic destinations.

Beginning in Blantyre, participants will embark on a 65km cycle through the rolling tea-growing landscapes of Thyolo before arriving at the dramatic foothills of Mount Mulanje. The expedition’s centrepiece is a two-day trek to Sapitwa Peak, Malawi’s highest summit at 3,002 metres. This demanding hike rewards participants with breathtaking mountain scenery, a sense of accomplishment and a unique overnight experience on the mountain.

Descending from Mulanje, the challenge continues with a 60km cycle to the historic town of Zomba, including a visit to the YODEP Community Project, providing valuable insight into local development initiatives and the opportunity to engage with Malawian communities. From Zomba, riders will cycle 50km through rural landscapes towards Liwonde, home to some of the country’s most important wildlife habitats and the mighty Shire River.

The final stage takes participants on a 60km ride to Makokola on the shores of Lake Malawi, where the expedition concludes beside one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes. Throughout the journey, athletes will experience a diverse range of environments, from tea estates and mountain trails to vibrant villages and lakeside scenery.

Designed for enthusiastic amateur athletes with a spirit of adventure, this expedition challenges both body and mind while fostering teamwork, resilience and a deeper connection with Malawi’s people, landscapes and culture.

Trip Purpose & Vision

The Malawi Challenge expedition is designed for travellers seeking meaningful growth, physical challenge, and purposeful impact. Set against Malawi’s breathtaking natural landscapes, from its tea fields and towering mountains and plateaux to its wildlife plains and serene lakeshore, this journey blends cycling & mountain hiking with powerful reflection, community connection, and team development.

Participants will ride alongside local cyclists on Buffalo Bikes, climb Mount Mulanje’s iconic peaks, and visit education and health initiatives through the YODEP Community Project in Zomba.

This is more than a trip, it’s a transformative experience that unites challenge, culture, and contribution.

Social Impact Project

Youth Development Programme (YODEP Malawi) is the chosen charity partner for this social impact expedition, offering participants a meaningful opportunity to connect directly with local communities and witness grassroots development in action. Based in the Zomba region, YODEP works across a range of community-led initiatives focused on youth empowerment, education, healthcare, sustainability, and social inclusion.

During the expedition, the group will spend a dedicated half day with the organisation, visiting surrounding communities, learning about everyday life in rural Malawi, and experiencing first-hand the positive impact of YODEP’s ongoing projects. The visit is designed to inspire cultural exchange, connection, and lasting social impact beyond the running challenge itself.
